When planning to expand, renovate, build or purchase a child care center, it is helpful to think of the process as consisting of three phases:
Phase 1 - Planning
Phase 2 - Pre-Development
Phase 3 - Development
Phase 4 - Start Up
A Child Care Facility Development & Financing Timeline has been developed to assist and guide you through these necessary phases of successful child care center facility development.
[Please note: this document is provided as an EXCEL file and will open in a new window with Adobe Acrobat. To return here, simply close that window after printing or reading the document. ]
Although the timeline presents the activities in these stages as sequential steps, some activities may occur simultaneously and others might not be necessary, depending on the type and scale of your project.
While this chart lists a number of activities involved in a child care center facility development project, each project is unique. Therefore, in addition to reviewing these steps you should be sure to identify any other steps that might be required for your own project.
This timeline is intended to provide a framework for sequencing activities and allocating the time necessary to complete them. The designations "P1" through "P12" represent periods of time in which to complete each task. Depending on your available time and resources, you may want to interpret these as monthly or quarterly periods. Shaded boxes indicate time for a specific task from start to finish. All timeframes are subject to flexibility.
For optimal outcomes with your project, it is critical that you begin the development process with the Planning Phase first.
